Kirkby Stephen is the only working station building
on the line were you can stay for a self-catering break.
It couldn’t be easier to arrive by train - the front door
is on the platform as you get off the train! With 7 trains
calling each way on weekdays and Saturday's it’s
well connected to the rest of the national rail network,
(there is a good bus service from Oxenholme). Or if you
come by car, the station is a 15 minute hop from junction
38 on the M6.
The market town of Kirkby Stephen is 1½ miles away, full of charm and character,
and boasting a good range of amenities. The area is rich in heritage and history, with everything from prehistoric stone circles to romantic castles and restoration projects
such as the Stainmore Railway. The Upper Eden area in which Kirkby Stephen station
sits is an unspoilt, uncrowded gem, and so easy to get to.

How would you like to enjoy your breakfast & watch
trains go by just a few feet away from the window?
Well now you can, at the beautifully restored station at Kirkby
Stephen in Cumbria on the world famous Settle & Carlisle line.
Built in 1875, the station was brought back to its former glory
in 2005 by the S&C Railway Trust.
Booking Office Cottage forms part of the station at the south end & includes a living room which was originally the stationmaster’s office. It sleeps up to 4 adults, & retains its period features such as sash windows & a cosy open coal fire for guests to enjoy in the living room.
The living room boasts giant picture windows on
both sides. So on the platform side you can watch steam-hauled excursion trains or diesel-hauled
2,000-tonne coal trains blasting uphill to Ais Gill summit, or look the other way to see glorious
views of the fells and Nine Standards Rigg.
The spectacular valley of Mallerstang & Wild Boar
Fell are right on your doorstep, the Lake District & Yorkshire Dales National Parks are in easy reach as
is Hadrian’s Wall to the north. It’s the perfect base for walking the fells, cycling, or general exploring - as well as travelling on the spectacular Settle & Carlisle line.
