About the Trust
The Settle - Carlisle Line
Horton-in-Ribblesdale Station
Following the successful restoration
of the Ribblehead station building, the Trust turned its attention to Horton-in-Ribblesdale.
In August 2002 the Trust completed the acquisition of the building on a
125 year lease similar to that at Ribblehead and work commenced on site in September.
Although the building was weatherproof
and structurally sound, following Railtrack’s
restoration work in 1997, much would still
be required to make it habitable. Plans were
drawn up to completely refurbish and convert the building for office use.
Work was completed in January 2003. The offices have since been successfully let and there
is a non-resident caretaker.
Principal funding came from the
Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust,
Yorkshire Forward and the Railway
Heritage Trust, with other contributions
from the Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line.
The building was short-listed for the 2003
National Railway Heritage Awards.
The work involved restoring and refurbishing the building, including many original features, to a high standard, creating office accommodation, a community room and improved passenger waiting facilities.
